Working with Shame and Self-criticism: Kirsten Neff'a Self-Compassion Framework

  • Awareness in Action online (map)

In this one-hour practical session introduces counsellors to the core components of self-compassion—self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness—grounded in Kristin Neff’s evidence-based research. Through brief experiential exercises, reflection, and clinical application, participants will explore how to cultivate self-compassion for themselves and integrate it effectively into therapeutic work with clients to support resilience, emotional regulation, and wellbeing.

This is the first in the series of Enhancing Practice: CPD Lunch Hour a regular one-hour online training session for counsellors and therapists, designed to support high-quality, reflective professional practice.

By the end of this one-hour session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three core components of self-compassion (self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness) as defined in Kristin Neff’s research

  • Experience and reflect on at least one brief self-compassion practice suitable for personal and clinical use

  • Identify common barriers to self-compassion in counselling contexts and ways to work with them

  • Apply self-compassion principles to support clients with shame, self-criticism, and emotional distress

  • Integrate self-compassion practices ethically and sensitively into their existing therapeutic approach
